AFP-South Dakota Criticizes House Defeat of Senate Bill 85
Pierre, SD — Americans for Prosperity–South Dakota (AFP–SD) criticized lawmakers for voting to defeat Senate Bill 85, which would require school boards to obtain local taxpayer approval before opting out of statutory property tax limits.
“Legislators took a step in the wrong direction by voting against SB 85. Taxpayers deserve a direct say in how they are taxed, especially when spending is above statutory limits already put in place, and I’m disappointed with the outcome of today’s vote,” AFP-SD State Director Jennifer Beving said.
“In a time when property taxes are the largest issue for South Dakotans, we believe taxpayers should be able to weigh in before school districts raise their taxes above statutory limits. AFP will continue working to make tax transparency and accountability the norm in South Dakota.”
AFP-SD believes voters deserve a voice, accountability, and transparency from their leaders when it comes to any new or increased taxes. SB 85, which already passed the State Senate, would have ensured taxpayers have a direct say in how much they pay to fund their local school districts. While districts are primarily funded through property taxes, many currently exceed statutory limits through the opt-out process. SB 85 would have strengthened accountability by requiring voter approval before those limits can be bypassed.
